Revisiting an artist

In September of 2001, I saw poet Eric Ott, a.k.a. "Big Poppa E" at a live slam at Bumbershoot on a hot Saturday afternoon, where people literally howled with laughter, he also tossed out these cute little micro books of poetry, one of which I kept for years, until I gave it away to someone else. He is best known for poems such as "Bitter Ex-Girlfriend Haiku." A WussyBoy Manifesto," and "Short People Rock!" He has a wonderful site with audio/video files to listen to here. I mention it now, as I revisit old artists that I was positively influenced by in the past.

The repressed secretary has had a whirlwind of a week. Starting with last Thursday February 24th, I was invited by friend Clark Humphrey of www.miscmedia.com to a 60's cocktail culture party with a twist. All I knew ahead of time was to "Come dressed up." The shin-dig took place at "The Blue Flamingo, amateur bar and home of Russell Scheidelman , whom I later found out was ex-Combutible Edison and the creator of an amusing little magazine called Organs and Bongos, which he gave to me as a gift. The next morning, as I was trying to recover, I read the piece straight through, I loved the "fake ads" for products like the ads for various vinyl albums that presumably someone should make, but never has..Need examples. Ever Google Yourself?

Have you ever Googled yourself? It's disturbing to note how many "Jennifer Morales-es" there really are out there in cyberspace and beyond. I searched and searched the pages and eventually found a reference to myself from my old pal Clark Humphrey of www.miscmedia.com thanking me for helping him with some installation work circa 2001. In the meantime, there were just hundreds and hundreds of posts and listings about people more prominent than me with my name, and even same geographic location. Being a Jennifer born in the 70's, I've met probably hundreds of other Jennifers at parties, school functions, and we are always having to clarify, "no call me Jen" or "Hi, I'm Jen M., to differentiate yourself from other "Jens" in the office, school or whatever.
