June 11th, of Evergreen alum and Kaos jazz buff Fred Kellog invited me to our annual live jazz event. All I knew was that I was invited to the "Free Jazz Festival." I thought it would be fun to get dressed up, bring a girlfriend and go yak it up with a bunch of lively jazz buffs. We went to a tiny art venue called Gallery 1412 , off of 18th and Union, in the same obscure row of a 2-chair barbarshop and a "christian youth ministry." Located at: Gallery 1412 1412 18th Ave Seattle, WA 206.322.1533. My preconcieved idea on this one was way off. My girlfriend Beth and I drove over there, puzzled to find a tiny shop-space with a paper sign sort of haphazardly pasted over another sign. It looked like it was made out of that reverse side of a brown, paper grocery store bag. There was a gated door that was locked, the windows where covered. Joining the fray

Though just recently accepted to the iSchool, and yet to introduce myself to the MLIS community, I will now join the fray of "librarian-types" who blog. Starting at the very beginning. Why do I want this? What do I hope to learn? Why do I think I might be successful at this? What do I envision? What could I hope to contribute? What type of work-environment do I hope to get out of this? Will this make me happy? These are just a few of the questions I need to learn to answer with ease. I was able to answer many of these questions successfully in my admissions essay (max 750) words, which I worked on daily for about 8 weeks. Going through the process of: idea, futher research, writing, revision, peer review, re-writing, better ideas, (rinse, repeat). In the end my essay was exactly 750 words, written as tightly and with as much passion as I could muster. It's a very personal statement so I'll not repost it here. Information as a Liberal Art: Statement for LIS 560 I wish I had found my calling to librarianship a decade ago while attending a small liberal arts college.  This unfortunately was not the case, yet I can begin to see in retrospect how well that education prepared me for the nature of what we are currently engaged in.  We are pursuing mastery of an emerging, ambiguous, vast field.  It is largely those "theoretical" skills that that allow us to do what we are trying to do.  This program asks us to transcend what we simply know because the universe of information is both vast and rapidly changing due to global social and technological forces.  We can no longer just “know” everything we need to do our jobs as information professionals, but will need the skills to just figure it out when the time comes.   As students we are asked to learn both new facts and think critically about the ambiguous nature of the information world we occupy.  Shapir...
