Prequel:

Friday night, Connor had karate until 7:30pm, and then later friend Kobe over for a sleepover. I also had a good friend and her daughter over for an elaborate dinner party. Dinner included salmon, salad with miso-ginger dressing, sauteed vegetables, crisped white potatoes, red wine and coffee ice cream for dessert, (although the kids had tacitos, corn and O.J.). The kids all played vids on the mini-tv/ GameCube. They then stayed up late, and then got up early to continue playing vids. I woke, started laundry by 7:50am, made a killer breakfast and tried to tackle the dishes from the night before. I made ham and sauteed potatoes, bannana, yogurt and orange juice for the boys, mushroom omlette and coffee for myself. Kobe had to get home, so we hustled over to 19th Ave, had an interesting visit with Kobe's mom and dad.

After, Connor and I took the #43 downtown, and met my sister at Mama's for lunch. Some background: Mama's Mexican Kitchen, on 2nd and Bell is a S. Cali version of NW Mexi food. Mama is named after my great grandmother Esther. Owned and operated by my paternal uncle, Myke, opened in 1974, is now somewhat of a landmark destination and "the oldest Mexican Restaurant in Seattle." Myke also owns the joint and also "The Lava Lounge" next door, a Hawaiian-themed hipster-joint.

My sister, Suzanne was working lunch, so we went down specifically to say hi to her. My sister is a goddess. She is married, keeps Newfoundland hounds, owns a home, leads a "Doom-Rock" band planning to re-tour in May, snowboards/works the mountain resorts during the Winter, is extensively tatoo-ed (I'd like to write a book about her life) works at Mama's. We go there for lunch. We eat, she works and is basically too busy to chat because she is an excellent server, and very attentive to her customer's needs. I have been eating at Mama's literally since I was six (1979). Connor always has the bowl of shredded, spiced beef with a side of tortillas, and I have the cilantro-prawn tacos with a corn tortillas. The food is phenominal and reminds me of my youth in a tangible, almost painful way. My uncle, now close to retirement comps our lunch. Thanks Myke! The host is the son of former Mama's vet, Brazilian ex-pat, Racquel. (Various cousins and extended family have staffed that place and kept it home away from home for 31 years). My mom used to work with her through the late 1980's. Rachel, I remember was a gorgeous, diminuitive woman, with a great personality. What I remember about her was her jewelery. Silver arm-bands, turquois beads, flashing ear-rings, reddish hair. She would wear vintage, beaded, cashmer cardigans and pleated skirts, way, way before it was hip. I wish so much that I had a better memory of seminal figures from my childhood.

We left Mama's at 2:45, took the #7 home. I left Connor at home playing vids while I went to the store to check my balance, buy dish soap, return some vids to "Broadway Video." I found my direct deposit had come in so I bought extravagant foods, came home, cooked, ate, while watching "High Fidelity," a movie I've seen several times already, but still have a soft spot for. Personally, I really identify with John Cusack's character re: "the top five most painful breakups." I've been through the ringer so many times. E-Gads, I was actually engaged at 17, dumped at the prom, etc. (still love you though, K-S.H.)

Now late, looking forward to R&R.
